Teacher Workshop 1 : Exploring “Senryu” as a Classroom Activity

On Tuesday 3rd December 2024, from 10:00 to 12:00, we held a study and networking session at the University of Edinburgh with the aim of strengthening a locally rooted community of Japanese language teachers in the UK.

This workshop welcomed Dr Tomoko Semba, Chief Japanese Language Advisor at the Japan Foundation, London, who was in Edinburgh for the administration of the JLPT. Dr Semba led an engaging session on the theme “Haiku and Senryu – Bringing Senryu into Classroom Activities”. The workshop covered:

• The differences between haiku and senryu

• Counting syllables in Japanese verse

• Examples of classroom activities using senryu

• Creating our own senryu poems

  
  

With 10 participants attending in person, the session offered a valuable opportunity to explore practical ways of integrating haiku and senryu into classroom practice. Through the tasks prepared by Dr Semba, teachers gained concrete ideas and inspiration for creative language activities.

Following the workshop, participants joined a lively networking session. It provided space for sharing teaching experiences, exchanging information, and discussing common challenges in Japanese language education. The feedback we received was very positive, with many highlighting how refreshing it was to connect with colleagues face-to-face.

We were also honoured by the presence of Mr Kazuya Takahashi, Deputy Director of the Japan Foundation, London. His contribution allowed for a frank and constructive discussion about the future promotion of Japanese language and culture in Scotland, which was a significant outcome of the event.

2024年12月3日(火）の10‐12時に、エディンバラ大学で「英国の日本語教師のための地域密着型コミュニティー作り」をめざした勉強会と交流会を開催しました。 今回の勉強会は、JLPT実施のためにエディンバラを来訪されていたJFロンドンのチーフ日本語アドバイザーの千馬（せんば）智子先生を講師としてお迎えしたもので、「俳句と川柳　川柳を教室活動に使ってみよう」というテーマで、下記内容にそったワークショップが行われました。

• 俳句と川柳のちがい

• 拍をかぞえよう

• 川柳を使った教室活動の紹介

• 川柳を作ってみよう

対面で実施した今回のワークショップの参加者（10人）は、千馬先生が用意してくださった様々なタスクに取り組みながら、俳句や川柳をどのように教室活動に取り込んでいけるかについて、具体的なヒントを得る機会となりました。また、ワークショップの後の交流会では、日本語教育に関する情報交換や日頃の悩みなどを語り合う時間を持つことができ、出席された皆さんから好評価をいただきました。
