Project Outline

The purpose of this project is to develop regional communities for Japanese language teachers which will lead to a UK-wide revitalization of Japanese language education and the promotion of BATJ among them.

To achieve this, as a pilot, we will form a Japanese language teachers’ community in Scotland, where the education system is quite different from the rest of the UK by organizing regular regional meetings and study sessions and conducting surveys among participants to obtain insights into the current situation and to grasp their needs. This project will be conducted as a pilot with a larger goal in mind – namely, contributing to developing similar communities in other regions and a UK-wide BATJ community by adapting our findings.

本事業の目的は、英国の日本語教師のための地域密着型のコミュニティーを作ることによって、英国全体での日本語教育の活性化を図ることです。その第一歩として、他の地域と教育システムがかなり異なるスコットランドで日本語教育に携わっている教師が交流するミーティングおよび勉強会を定期的に開いてコミュニティー作りに取り組むと共に、それらに参加した教師へのアンケートやインタビューを通して、日本語教育の現状がどうなっているか、どのようなコミュニティーなら参加したいと思うか、どのようなサポートが必要なのかなどを調査しています。また、その活動および調査結果を英国の他の地域でのコミュニティー作りにも役立て、英国全体をカバーしているBATJのコミュニティー形成にも役立てることを念頭においています。

Background

The United Kingdom (the UK) comprises four countries, and laws and education systems can vary in each of them. Due to this, although BATJ aims for encouraging and promoting Japanese language education in the UK, its activities may not always be suitable for all the regions. Also, there are quite a few Japanese language teachers in regions outside England, and they tend to feel distant from BATJ due to the difference in the education systems and geographical distance. To improve the current state in the UK, it is vital to form regional communities for Japanese language teachers by grasping the current situation in each region and teachers’ needs.

連合王国 (UK)は4つの地域が連合してできた国で、法律や教育システムが異なっているものが多いという事情があります。教育背景が異なっているため、英国全体をカバーしているBATJの活動が必ずしもその地域に合っているとは限らず、地理的距離も加わって、自分とは関係ない、参加する意義がないと心理的にも遠く感じている地方の日本語教師も少なくありません。こうした現状の改善を図るには、各地域における日本語教育の実態や日本語教師のニーズを把握することによって、地域に根差した日本語教師コミュニティー作りを行うことが必要となっています。

Objectives

The purpose of this project is to develop regional communities for Japanese language teachers which will lead to a UK-wide revitalization of Japanese language education and the promotion of BATJ among them. To achieve this, we will conduct the following activities:

In order to form a Japanese language teachers’ community in Scotland, we will organise regular regional meetings and study sessions to get to know each other.
In order to obtain insights into the current situation of Japanese language teaching in Scotland and to grasp teachers’ needs, we will conduct questionnaires and interview surveys.
Based on the findings, we will develop effective action plans for the community in Scotland.
By sharing our findings with other teachers through BATJ, we aim to contribute to developing similar communities in other regions and a UK-wide revitalization of Japanese language education, and to promoting BATJ among them.

本事業の目的は、英国の日本語教師のための地域密着型のコミュニティーを作ることによって、英国全体での日本語教育の活性化を図ることである。この目的を達成するために次の活動を行う。

スコットランドで日本語を教えている教師のネットワークを作るため、ミーティングや勉強会を定期的に開いてお互いを知るきっかけを作る。
上の活動に参加した教師へのアンケートやインタビューを通して、日本語教育の現状がどうなっているか、どのようなコミュニティーなら参加したいと思うか、どのようなサポートが必要なのかなどを調査する。
調査結果をもとに、スコットランドのコミュニティー活性化に向けたアクションプランをたてる。
本事業の調査結果を発表して他の教師と共有し、BATJへの参加率が特に低い他の地域での日本語教師ネットワーク作りと、英国全体での日本語教育の活性化、BATJへの参加促進に貢献する。
