スコットランドでは、日本語教育および日本研究があまり盛んではなく、限られた教育機関でのみ行われているという現状がある。 

日本研究に日本語の能力・知識が欠かせないのと同様に、日本語教育においても日本の文化や社会背景を学ぶ機会を提供せずに日本語のみを教えることは難しく、日本の文化および社会についての学びを融合させつつ、双方の教育の活性化を図る必要がある。 

この度、BATJ地域密着型日本語教師コミュニティー作りプロジェクトの一環として行うスコットランド日本語教師ワークショップを、同じくスコットランドにて開かれるJF/BAJSの大学院生のためのワークショップに続けて開催することで、当地域での日本語教育・日本学のさらなる振興を目指している。 

ワークショップのタイトルの「日本語教育と日本学のはざまから」は、午前の部で上映を行うドキュメンタリー映画「はざま -母語のための場をさがして- 」からの借用だが、今回の大きなテーマである日本語教育と日本研究の相互補完と活性化は、正に双方の「はざま」からその可能性を探っていけるのではないかと考え、午前・午後のいずれのイベントにまたがるテーマとして「はざま」を使わせていただいた。 

午前の部では、映画を中心に日本社会における継承語教育政策（日本国内での移民に対する政策および日本国外における継承語としての日本語教育）について、日本学および日本語教育の両方の側面から考察する。こちらはエディンバラだけでなく、ロンドンおよびオンライン同時開催のため、様々な方が参加できるようにした。 

午後の部で行う多読ワークショップでは、日本語の文章を別の言い回しに変えるタスクを通して、日本語教師が教室で行う多読活動のスキルアップを図ることをねらっている。また、本活動は、日本語非母語話者が多いであろうJF/BAJS PhDワークショップ参加者にとって、日本語のブラッシュアップにつながり、自分の研究を日本語でわかりやすく他者に説明するために必要な「リライト力」を向上させる良い機会となりうると考えている。  

日本語教育と日本学の「はざま」から、今回のワークショップを通してスコットランド、そして英国において、相互協力による双方の振興に少しでも貢献できることを願っている。 

In Scotland, Japanese language education and Japanese studies are not very active and are only offered at a limited number of institutions. 

Just as proficiency and knowledge of Japanese are essential for Japanese studies, it is challenging to teach the language without providing opportunities to learn about Japanese culture and social contexts. Therefore, integrating cultural and societal learning with both types of education is necessary for revitalisation. 

As part of the BATJ community-building project for Japanese language teachers, we plan to hold a workshop in Scotland following the JF/BAJS postgraduate workshop. This aims to further promote Japanese language education and studies in the region. 

The workshop’s title, “In Between: Japanese Language Education and Japanese Studies,” is inspired by the documentary film screened in the morning session, "In Between: In Search of Native Language Spaces." The theme of mutual complementarity and revitalisation between the two fields explores their potential synergy, with “In Between” serving as a theme throughout both morning and afternoon events. 

In the morning session, we will focus on heritage language education policies in Japanese society (1. immigrants in Japan, and 2. Japanese language education as a heritage language abroad) from the perspectives of both Japanese studies and language education. This will be held simultaneously in Edinburgh, London, and online to enable broad public participation. 

The afternoon’s extensive reading workshop aims to enhance teachers' skills in conducting these activities through tasks that involve rephrasing Japanese texts. This also offers JF/BAJS PhD workshop participants, many of whom may be non-native speakers, an opportunity to improve their Japanese and enhance their "rewrite skills" necessary for clearly explaining their research. 

Through this workshop, positioned “in between” Japanese language education and Japanese studies, we hope to contribute to the mutual development of both fields through collaborative efforts in Scotland and the UK.
